What is Yoga?
The word yoga is often interpreted as "union" or a method of discipline from the Sanskrit word "yuj" (yoke or bind). A practitioner is called a yogi, a doctor, a yogini.
The positions ....
Contemporary Western approach to yoga is not based on religion or belief, but yoga has its roots in Hinduism and Brahmanism. Yoga was developed by ascetics screens live mainly in the southern parts of India. The lights were observed nature and also lived close as they could to land, the study of many aspects of nature, animals and themselves. Through observation and imitation of different postures and habits of the animal kingdom, they were able to develop the grace, strength and wisdom.
It is through these very disciplined lives that practicing yoga postures have been developed. The development of a series of postures was necessary to maintain flexible and able to withstand long periods of silence during meditation body.
Writings ....
Back to containing the sacred texts called "Vedas" Brahmanism. These scripts contain instructions and incantations. It is the oldest text "Rig Veda" in Scripture as the word yoga makes its appearance, it was there nearly 5,000 years. The fourth document called "Atharva Veda" contains mainly healing spells and magical rites many applications use medicinal plants. Provided for the average person with spells and incantations to use in your life and practice of "Veda" every day can still be seen on the streets of India today.
The Bhagavad Gita, another old book on the spiritual life is described as a Treaty of yoga, even though the word yoga is used as a spiritual medium. This is the literature of Patanjali have developed "eight limbs of yoga". Yoga Sutra are mainly on the development of "nature of mind" and I'll explain more about this in the next section.

The Vratyas, a group of priests who worshiped fertility Rudra, god of wind would try to imitate the sound of wind in his song. They found they could produce sound by controlling your breathing and practice of breath control "Pranayama" was formed. Pranayama is the practice of breath control in yoga.
Roads ....
The Upanishads, which are the sacred revelations of ancient Hinduism developed the two disciplines of karma yoga, the path of action and jnana yoga, the path of knowledge. The roads have been developed to help students free of suffering and eventually win enlightenment.
The teaching of the Upanishads differed from the Vedas. The Vedas require external offerings to the gods in order to have a happy life abundant. The Upanishads by the practice of Karma Yoga focuses on internal sacrifice of the ego to be free from suffering. In place of sacrifice of crops and (external) animals, which was the sacrifice of the interior that became the basic philosophy I, for what yoga has become known as the path of renunciation.
Yoga also share certain characteristics with Buddhism that can be traced throughout history. During the sixth century BC, Buddhism also emphasizes the importance of meditation and the practice of physical postures. Siddhartha Gautama was the first Buddhist to study yoga actually.
What is Yoga Sutra and how philosophy developed?
Yoga Sutra is a compilation of the 195 states that provide essentially an ethical guide for living a moral life and incorporating the science of yoga in it. An Indian sage called Patanjali was believed to have attended this there are over 2000 years and has become the cornerstone of the philosophy of classical yoga.
The word sutra literally means "a thread" and is used to denote a particular form of written and oral communication. Due to the abrupt style sutras are written in the student must rely on a guru to interpret the philosophy contained in each. The direction in each of the sutras can be adapted to the specific needs of the student.
The Yoga Sutra is a system of yoga, but it is not a description of a single posture or asana in it! Patanjali has developed a guide for living the right life. The core of his teaching is the "eightfold path of yoga" or "the eight limbs of Patanjali". These are the suggestions of Patanjali to live a better life through yoga.
Posture and breath control, the two fundamental practices of yoga are described as the third and fourth branches in eight limbs of Patanjali path to self-realization. The third practice of yoga poses are modern today. When you join a yoga class, you may find that is all you need to fit your lifestyle.
The Eight Limbs of Yoga
1. Yamas (restraints)
These are a "moral" living his life for his social behavior:
or nonviolence (ahimsa) - not to hurt a living being
or Truth and honesty (satya) - not to lie
or (asteya) - To not fly
or Nonlust (brahmacharya) - Avoid sex nonsense - moderation in all things sex.
or possessiveness or greed (aparigraha) - no treasure, free from greed and material desires
2. niyamas (observances)
This is the way we treat our internal discipline:
or Purity (shauca). Purity achieving through practice of the five Yamas. Treat your body like a temple and care.
or contentment (Santosha). Find happiness in what you have and what you do. Take responsibility for where you are, seek happiness in the moment and choose to grow.
or austerity (tapas): Develop self-discipline. Discipline exercise on the body, speech and mind to aim for a higher spiritual purpose.
o Study of the sacred text (svadhyaya). Education. Study relevant books to inspire and rain.
or live with the divine consciousness (ishvara-pranidhana). Being dedicated to all that is their god or what is seen as divine.
3. asanas (postures) -
These are the yoga postures:
o To create a flexible seating for a long time and still the mind body. If you can control the body, you can also control the mind. Patanjali and other ancient yogis used asana to prepare the body for meditation.
Only practicing yoga postures can benefit health. You can start at any time and at any age. As we age, we stiffen, you remember the last time you could have bent down to pick up something and how you felt? Imagine you age fifty, sixty, seventy and be able to touch your toes or balance on one leg. Did you know that most injuries among elderly are falls? We tend to lose balance as we age and practice something that will help this is definitely a plus.
The fourth part, breath control is a good vehicle to use if you are interested in learning meditation and relaxation .......
4. Pranayama (breathing) - Control of breathing:
inhalation, retention of breath, and exhalation
o The practice of breathing is easier to concentrate and meditate. Prana is the energy that exists everywhere, this is the life force that flows through each of us through our breathing.
5. Pratyahara (sense withdrawal)
or Pratyahara is the withdrawal of the senses. Occurs during meditation, breathing exercises, or the practice of yoga postures. When master Pratyahara you will be able to focus and concentrate and not be distracted by outside sensory.
6. Dharana (concentration) - teaching the mind to focus.
o When the sense of time is concentrated. The goal is to calm the mind, for example, fixing the mind on an object and push all thoughts. Dharana is true when the mind can focus effortlessly.
7. Dhyan (meditation), - the state of meditation
or concentration (dharana) leads to a state of meditation. In meditation, we have a sense of awareness and is one with the universe. It is to be aware of any distractions.
8. samadhi (absorption) - bliss
or absolute happiness is the ultimate goal of meditation. It is a state of union with God or you and your guess is when you and the universe one.
The eight members work together: The first five are on the body and brain-yama, niyama asana, pranayama and pratyahara - are the foundation of yoga and provide a platform for a spiritual life. The last three are in the refurbishment of mind. They were developed to help the practitioner to achieve enlightenment or oneness with Spirit.
How to choose the type of yoga for you?
Choose the type of yoga is practiced is entirely a personal preference and, therefore, why we study here to start. Some guys have the highest positions, some move through them faster. Some styles focus on body alignment, others differ over time and the selection of postures, meditation and spiritual fulfillment. All are adaptable to the physical situation of the student.

Want more emphasis on meditation or just health issues? Some schools teach relaxation, some focus on strength and agility, and others are more aerobic.
I suggest you try some different classes in your area. I realized that even among the teachers of a particular style, there may be differences in the way the student receives the class. It is important to find a teacher you feel comfortable to really enjoy and create longevity as practiced well.

Some of the great masters ...
All styles share a common lineage. Founders of two major styles of yoga Raja / Ashtanga and Avenger were all students of the same great master named Krishnamacharya.
Shri T. Krishnamacharya, was born in the village of Muchukunte, state of Karnataka in 1888. His formal education, mostly in Sanskrit, includes degrees from several universities in northern India. He studied for seven years as a yogi distinguished in western Tibet Rama Mohana Brahmachari who ordered the therapeutic use of asanas and pranayama. Then he returned to South India and established a school of yoga in the palace of the Maharaja of Mysore. He died at the age of 101 in 1988.

So what type is right for you?
Not all types of yoga available, but can be seen in the short explanations of each yoga practice may differ considerably. Each makes use of physical postures and breathing to strengthen the body for meditation, an integral part of the practice of yoga.
This is where it is important that students understand what they want from your yoga practice and choose a style to answer that. If you try to not think that is quite natural, try another, because it will be totally different. If you start one that is too demanding to rewrite until you find convenient for you.
Some of us want to work only in the body and some want more emphasis on research method of self-realization, regardless of the reason I'm sure there are many styles in their development and more every day to meet our needs.
You are never too old to start yoga, I've met people in their seventies from the first time and life changing experience affects. If you ever sat and watched your cat or dog in the morning watch is the first thing they do? stretch. If we pause for a moment and look at what we can learn from nature and the animal kingdom we realize that just stretch is lost somewhere through our evolution.
The following table shows the scale of 1-10, I explain the degree of / physical relaxation and meditation degree of each yoga practice (10 being highest)

Sivananda Yoga Integral Yoga and have also been founded by students of another great teacher named Sivananda. Swami Sivananda Saraswati was born in Pattamadai Kuppuswamy, Tamil Nadu, India. A Hindu by birth, is a well known Yoga and Vedanta (a main branch of Hindu philosophy) author.
He is known for having written over 300 books on these and related during his life. In 1936, he founded a new religious movement "The Divine Life Society" on the bank of holy river Ganges. He died July 14, 1963.
